A change and a blunder: How HR destroyed an IPL franchise

It is exquisite, yet it is not warfare – C’est magnifique, mais pas la guerre. For some, this is the ideal encapsulation of the wealthiest league of bat and ball in the world, as seen by its legendary use during the Charge of the Light Brigade.

Imagine a team that consists of the greatest individual contributions, including a leader with a track record of success, two of the world’s most skilled and formidable engineers, two more highly talented engineers, and an outstanding group of support personnel.

More than sufficient power to create successful products. Instead, the owners desire more as nothing is more successful than excess. They add another extremely talented engineer to their team—one who is well aware of his awesomeness—who left the firm a few years ago in search of better opportunities and returns as King.

like a result, a leader for a leader handles people like resources—as implied by the name. With the exception of humans, who are bothersome and do not labor only for money, even vast amounts of it. They have expectations and goals.

They take pride in what they have created, and no amount of “But this is your job, so do it” will make them do any better than they did when that pride is abruptly, without warning, and without good cause taken away. Even worse, the management has temporarily taken away the one thing that genuinely maintains good achievers in their positions from others who have been made to feel they are in line for the position and have stayed on while the others leave.

Have faith. Above all, hope is crucial.

The franchise collapses. The previously whispered fissures become completely public due to a hastily captured film, similar to a nasty email sent with the subject line “reply-all.” The company, usually at the top of the table, ends up solidly on the bottom as the superstars of the past and the new ones all reach the lowest point of their careers. Similar to the first Charge of the Light Brigade, this is terrible in that it represents the very human foolishness of not comprehending how people behave and work. It is the demise of one of the greatest franchises.
